What is a ‘tag description’?

By Tagging

Del.icio.us has just asked me to create a tag description.

Tag Description

I had no idea ‘tag descriptions’ existed within del.icio.us. It must be something new.

There’s a help section dedicated to describing tags

Many people use the same word to tag, even when they may mean very different things. Tag Descriptions allow you to describe your tags for yourself and others visiting your bookmarks.

To use Tag Descriptions simply go to your tag page. From this page you should see a link called “create tag description”. Clicking this link pops up the interface for creating a Tag Description. Please note that Tag Descriptions are always public, so don’t put in anything that you don’t want others to see.

So, like tagging, I guess it’s up to me to decide for myself how best to describe my tags.

Shows me a definition at the top of ‘Your items tagged x’ list.

The tag description exists for me only, though other people browsing my tag archives can see my tag description. They could

Could these ‘tag descriptions’ be shared like wikipedia?

Would del.icio.us need a Wiki just to handle the inevitable disagreements over these definitions?

And, more importantly, doesn’t the tag simply define itself?

By adding a tag description aren’t we admitting that the tag is useless by itself?

Hmm…

Here are some comments on this feature on the tagged ‘tag descriptions’ help page in del.icio.us (Gotta love recursion!).
